Ah summer! The season where farmer’s markets are bursting with fruits and veggies of all different colors, sizes, and tastes. It’s the perfect season to try out different food! But staring at a mountain of unidentifiable produce can be intimidating, even for the bravest of us foodies! Luckily for us, Illustrated Bites has created a chart for squashes- the perfect addition for any meal! Not only does the chart differentiate between the types of squashes, but it helps you pick the most perfect, ripest squash!

We all love going to the nearest food truck during our lunch hour but, let’s face it, who wants to spend their whole break standing in line waiting? Not us! That’s why we’re thrilled that a new Boston-based iPhone app called Pingup was just released. Pingup allows you to text local food trucks, bars and restaurants the same way you would text your friends: type in a few words, press “Send”, and they’ll respond right back to you. You can ask them anything from, “How long is the line?” to “What’s the special today?” You could probably tell them how your new puppy chewed up all your furniture but they probably wouldn’t appreciate that… A lot of businesses have already joined the Pingup network, including one of our favorites, Momogoose. Pingup is available now either on iTunes or Pingup’s website.
This summer, Sabra is embarking on a tour of the US and Canada called the Sabra Taste Adventure Tour. We’re so excited to announce that the Charles River Food Truck Festival in Brighton is going to be one of the stops on their tour!
Not only will there be free samples of Sabra hummus, but a full toppings bar and professional chefs demonstrating how you can use hummus in just about any dish! (Sabra Hummus Ravioli, anyone?) You’ll also be one of the first to try some of Sabra’s latest concoctions, including salsas, guacamole, and Greek yogurt veggie dips! For more information, be sure to check out the Sabra Taste Adventure Tour on both Facebook and Twitter! We hope to see you in line at the Sabra Adventure Truck!
Some people like Thanksgiving and others like Christmas. We at FTFNE however, loveNational Sugar Cookie Day! Of all cookies, the sugar cookie is definitely the most perfect: you don’t just bake them but you can decorate them with all sorts of fun frosting and candies too!
This Saturday at the Worcester Food Truck Festival, you’ll be able to try sugar- as well as many other cookies, desserts and more at the Sweet Truck! But if you can’t wait until then-after all, you shouldeat sugar cookies on National Sugar Cookie Day- try this great recipe to make your own homemade treats: INGREDIENTS
2 sticks (8 ounces) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
3 large egg yolks
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 cup sugar (sanding or granulated) for rolling cookies
Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Combine butter and granulated sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and mix on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the bowl sides and bottom. Add yolks, vanilla, and salt and mix on medium speed until smooth, about 30 seconds.
Add flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Mix on low speed until dough comes together. Scoop dough by rounded tablespoons and roll between your hands until smooth.
Roll dough in sanding or granulated sugar to coat and place on parchment-paper-lined baking sheets. Bake cookies until they are golden brown around the edges but still soft in the center, about 15 to 16 minutes. Immediately transfer to a rack to cool completely.
Just when we thought our taste buds couldn’t get any happier, KIND Healthy Snacks has decided to join us in their own mobile KIND food truck! At various festivals throughout the rest of the 2012 season, you’ll be able to sample some of KIND’s tasty snack bars.
KIND bars are made of whole nuts and fruit- you know, ingredients on the packaging that you can actually pronounce! Not only are they healthy for you but they taste good too! We at FTFNE could eat a hundred of them (though that would probably defeat the purpose of eating healthy)! Some of our favorite KIND bars include: Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate + Protein, Cranberry Almond + Antioxidants, and Blueberry Pecan + Fiber. You’ll be able to taste these and many other of KIND’s delicious products at some of our festivals this summer and fall!
Today is “Creative Ice-Cream Flavor Day” so with the hot summer now officially in full swing, it’s the perfect time to check out all the creative flavors of ice cream that are available to us. I love ice cream and especially trying new types of ice cream that are unique and just different. Today makes me think of an ice cream shop in Ireland in my home town called “Kenmare Ice Cream” that serves the most quirky ice cream flavors and when I asked her how she even thinks of putting these flavors into ice cream, she said it’s her customers who give her the ideas. She has everything from plain vanilla to chili chocolate in her variety of flavors. I always get the lemon meringue ice cream when I am there which as you can imagine is so good. She puts actual lemon meringue pieces rather than just flavoring into the ice cream which gives it the amazing flavor and it really tastes awesome.
I think since arriving in Boston, the most interesting ice cream combination I have seen has to be Emack and Bolio’s ice cream pizza. The “pizza” is made with a brownie crust, vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, and marshmallow. It not only looks amazing but it tastes incredible.
Here in the United States, there are so many creative flavors to choose from but why not today make up your own? So this weekend, we encourage you to celebrate “Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day” by mixing two or more of your favorite flavors, candies or even go that step further and mix sweet and savory which will always be interesting. Also it is important to note you may enjoy ice- cream all month long as July is also “National Ice-Cream Month” so you could try a different flavor each and every day. Enjoy!
